With its aesthetically pleasing appearance and high quality construction, the tuft + paw Cove Litter Box may be a great option for cat owners who are willing to spend a few extra dollars.

We tested this litter box over the course of several weeks on our two cats, and came up with the pros and cons that are written in this article. Let’s take a look at the tuft + paw Cove Litter Box and see if it is as functional and attractive as it claims to be.

Mallory Crusta, our Head of Content, tested the tuft + paw Cove Litter Box in May of 2021 and I tested it myself this year. Check out Mallory’s in-depth video review of the tuft + paw Cove Litter Box on the Cats.com YouTube channel.

The Design

The tuft + paw Cove Litter Box is an open design and high-quality litter box that is made with durable materials. It is able to fit into small spaces yet offers plenty of room for cats weighing up to 20 pounds.

The tuft + paw Cove Litter Box includes a shield that adds an additional 8 inches of height around the litter box to help prevent messes. It also comes with several accessories, including a scooper, dustpan, and brush that can be stored in compartments on the back of the box.

Cats can enter the litter box from any side but if you opt for the shield, there is a front corner for easy entry. It measures 26 L x 16 W x 14.5 H inches with the shield in place and 26 L x 16 W x 6.5 H without it.

The base of the tuft + paw Cove Litter Box is rubber, which stops it from moving around. This litter box is also made from anti-stick plastic that is 100% toxin free and claims to be very easy to clean. It also has a handle on the bottom for easy transport.

Cleaning The tuft + paw Cove Litter Box

To get a feel for how the tuft + paw Cove Litter Box works, Mallory tested it on her two cats. When it comes to cleaning, it has everything you need in the box.

A big perk of this litter box is how easy it is to clean with included cleaning accessories. The scoop is well made and fits in its own compartment at the back of the litter box. There is a brush and small dustpan to help clean up any scatter that gets outside the box. As with any open litter box, there will be some scatter and tracking.

You have the option to use liners but it is not needed. The scoop does a good job of removing dirty litter and it doesn’t seem to stick to the sides or bottom of the box.

Wiping the box clean is simple when it comes time to change out the litter. There are no nooks or cracks for litter to get trapped in either. Even the storage compartments can be removed for cleaning.

Our only complaint is that the dust pan does not have any type of rubber which makes sweeping up litter difficult.

Does It Control Odor Well?

The tuft + paw Cove Litter Box is an open litter box design and should be cleaned on a regular basis. Odor does not get trapped because of its open design, but the litter you use will have a big impact on odor control.

The fact this litter box has no nooks or crannies to collect odors and germs helps control smells.

Does It Control Tracking And Scatter?

The tuft + paw Cove Litter Box was not 100% track-proof, and there is probably not a litter box that is. However, The tuft & paw Cove Litter Box does a decent job of keeping a lot of scatter from escaping due to its 8-inch shield.

There have been some reviews complaining that the opening for the shield is near a corner and many cats do their business in the corners. This can often result in litter being kicked right out of the opening. Placing a mat in front of the litter box entry may help catch some of the litter.

Overall Impressions

This litter box is made from recycled plastics, making it environmentally friendly. Mallory Crusta / Cats.com

Overall, the tuft + paw Cove Litter Box is a nice looking litter box that gets the job done. This litter box is made from recycled plastics, making it environmentally friendly. We like that it comes with its own accessories for cleaning up and that they have their own storage compartment built into the box.

Our only issue with the tuft + paw Cove Litter Box itself is the size. It works great for average size cats but claims it can fit cats up to 20 pounds. With only a 20 inch width litter area, it seems a bit tight for a larger size cat to move around comfortably.

Our cats had no issues using the tuft + paw Cove Litter Box. There was some scatter around the opening of the litter box even with the shield in place. Other than that, it did a pretty good job keeping the litter inside the box.

How Much Does tuft + paw Cove Litter Box Cost?

The tuft + paw Cove Litter Box is a pricy litter box at $149 without the shield and $199 with the shield, at the tuft & paw website. Both include accessories but you will also have to pay shipping, which is $20 if you spend under $195.

Is The tuft + paw Cove Litter Box Worth It?

You should consider the tuft + paw Cove Litter Box if you want a litter box that is environmentally friendly and esthetically pleasing.

For the cost, you do get a litter box made from durable and recycled materials. This litter box also includes a scoop, dust pan and brush to help clean up messes.

That being said, not many open litter boxes are easy to clean or do not have nooks and crannies that trap litter and bacteria. This is a well made litter box and the company refuses to cut corners in the manufacturing process.

If you choose the tuft + paw Cove Litter Box with a shield you do get the added benefit of less scatter outside of the box. If you have a cat that likes to “go” in the corners, the entrance could be problematic for you at times, being that it is set in a corner.

If you are searching for a litter box that helps the environment then this may be the litter box for you. tuft & paw does participate in a carbon offset program, which means that 100% of the emissions they create, are replaced with trees being planted.

tuft & paw has also partnered with over 50 shelters in the US in an effort to re-use litter boxes. Basically, if a shelter needs to get rid of litter boxes, tuft+paw will pay to have them shipped to another shelter that needs them.
